Happily Ever Endings... Dark Eden by Patrick Carmen

Happily Ever Endings... was born out of sheer frustration. You know how when you read a series and you love it but the last book takes a little while to come out and then you sort of forget parts of the novel? That's what these posts are going to serve to remedy. Happily Ever Ending... is a short post about what happened at the ending of each book that is going to be in a series for people who need a quick reminder of what happened in the previous installment. I hope this saves someone else the frustration that I went through!

Dark Eden by Patrick Carmen
Fifteen-year-old Will Besting is sent by his doctor to Fort Eden, an institution meant to help patients suffering from crippling phobias. Once there, Will and six other teenagers take turns in mysterious fear chambers and confront their worst nightmares—with the help of the group facilitator, Rainsford, an enigmatic guide. When the patients emerge from the chamber, they feel emboldened by the previous night's experiences. But each person soon discovers strange, unexplained aches and pains. . . . What is really happening to the seven teens trapped in this dark Eden?
Patrick Carman's Dark Eden is a provocative exploration of fear, betrayal, memory, and— ultimately—immortality.

Will wakes up from his treatment in a room like the bunker but all of his things are missing. He realizes he's been moved to his room and goes up the elevator. In the room, he realizes that his hearing is almost completely shot but other than that, he is cured of his fear of being around other people and has come to terms with his younger brother's death. Marisa is also cured though she sleeps often. They have dinner where part of his hearing returns and then he goes off to his room where he finds his pack. His recorder is gone but his ipod isn't. Rainsford comes to visit them and tell them that Avery wants to be cured. During that time, Will listens to his headphones so he isn't brainwashed into forgetting.

When Avery goes to get healed, Will follows her down the stairs Rainsford always takes. He wonders how Rainsford plans to heal her fear of death. There he finds the room Dr. Stevens has been broadcasting from and follows the hall more to find Dr. Stevens and Ms. Goring watching the screen he used to watch. He follows the chord back and sees Avery in one chair hooks ed up a helmet and Rainsford in the other. They both look dead. The six are told they are leaving and Avery will be staying on for a while longer. Ms. Goring stops him on his way out and gives him his tape recorder which he stuffs in his bag.

Will fears Avery is dead but she appears at the end of the woods and says she's going with them. David drives up on a dirt bike and Avery decides to go with him instead. Ms. Stevens pulls up and asks where Avery went but seems fine when it is revealed David took her. She confides in them saying that she adopted Avery and knows David will get her home. Later, Will gets to listen to the tapes. Ms. Goring has labeledthem and tells him that she needed to get the truth of Eden off her chest. She shows Will what happened to Rainsford after he left, how his face and body aged in reverse and how he became David. She explains that she doesn't know how old Rainsford is though it must be very old by now and reveals the full horror of Eden.

In order to survive, Rainsford needs the blood of the youth to live forever. In exchange, he must get rid of his old blood which he gives to them which makes them lose their fear but comes at a price. For Will, he will steadily lose his hearing until he won't be able to at all. For Marisa, she will continue to sleep more and more until she eventually just won't wake up. Will looks up the meanings of the stories they are forced to read and discovers the colors signify the Masque of the Red Death and the name Rainsford comes from The Most Dangerous Game. Ms. Goring explains that Rainsford is really her husband and Dr. Stevens their daughter. She also says he will wipe her memory and run off with Avery to start the cycle over again. Will decides that if he has anything to do with it, Rainsfords' cycle will end.

Thinking of writing something below? Well, that's why you are awesome! I always love feedback!

This blog is an award free zone. With the demand of a full time job, blogging time is becoming much more precious and I just don't have the time to meet the demands of awards. Thanks so much for thinking of me anyway!
